No Coke at Whole Foods
I was walking down the aisle of a surprisingly full South Beach Whole Foods Market one day after the curfew began. Shoppers, mostly tourists like me meandered along the aisles looking for items that seemed priced as if in a hyperinflationary state. A passing comment between store workers caught my attention: “Can you believe she complained about no Coke in the store!” A google search later and I am reading a Huffington post piece about how Amazon and Whole Foods have been fighting about stocking Coca-Cola on their shelves. Whole Foods prides itself on its strict product sourcing rules that require foods free of artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated fats. Coca-Cola fails to meet essentially every criteria. Therefore, no Coke on the shelves. How long will this last though? Amazon has no issues with Coca-Cola. What happens when consultants prove that people shop elsewhere simply because some highly popular products are not available at Whole Foods? Why the curfew in South Beach? I don’t have all the answers but I can say for sure that Coke’s color has nothing to do with its absence at Whole Foods in March of 2021 although it might have something to do with that curfew.
